Still hungry? Me too. God damn I love Raw Chocolate. The abundance of it in Bali is one of the reasons that I believe helped make Ubud the Yoga, Raw Food, Spirituality, Healing & Detox Mecca of the Eastern Hemisphere that it is. The world’s largest commercial bamboo construct happens to be a Raw Chocolate Factory about 30 minutes away from here!

Would you like a slice of Raw Chocolate Cheesecake ?

Chocolate, or Theobroma Cacao, is one of the world’s richest foods, both in flavor and in culture. Here’s an article I wrote about it, which covers its history and nutrition.

Before we get to the juicy part of this post, my absurdly decadent and delicious Raw Chocolate Cheesecake recipe, I want to briefly mention all this chocolate hating that is going on these days and what I think of it. There’s two main arguments people are making :

  1. Cacao can’t actually be raw, as.
  2. Cacao is a stimulant and contains excitotoxins that are unhealthy.

I’m not going to get into the science right now, I’m going to focus on culture and personal experience. Cacao was eaten as a powerful superfood and even used as currency by one of the world’s most revered ancient civilizations, the Aztecs. They possessed no industrial machinery, and were drying the beans au naturel, meaning that the temperature was definitely kept below 43 Celsius most, if not all of the time. If they were able to keep cacao raw hundreds of years ago, we most certainly can now. They were also a vibrantly healthy civilization, and ate this stuff everyday.

There are also tons of people around the modern world that LOVE raw chocolate (especially when it’s in a raw chocolate cheesecake ;)) and are also thriving from a health perspective, including revered nutrition expert David Wolfe. Here’s his take on the Cacao Controversy.

I personally feel amazing when I eat a moderate amount of cacao. It’s definitely a stimulant and eating too much of it makes me feel jittery and ungrounded. This is an experience I’ve had shared with me by several other raw chocolate enthusiasts.

My opinion on the people who are hating on cacao is that they are making generalizations on the healthiness of a product that I believe, like most food, is better for some people than others. My projection is that some of them are using this controversial issue as a way to gain attention for commercial purposes.

My advice : eat raw chocolate if it makes you feel good. Don’t eat it if it doesn’t. It’s pretty simple.

And if eating Raw Chocolate makes you feel good, then this Raw Chocolate Cheesecake is definitely for you 🙂
