THE Royal Fruit Pie

This is a special recipe. I’ve been scheming it for a long time. I was waiting until I could make a trip to my favorite Durian Village in Bali so that I could use the best stuff. Ibu Rai (ibu means mama in Indonesian) also happens to have some of the best Mangosteens on the Island. You’ll meet her soon. She’s the star of the almost finished Music Video for my Durian Song. If you’ve never had a mangosteen before, it’s this absurdly juicy, sweet and slightly tart gem of a tropical fruit that has rightfully earned the nickname, “The Queen of Fruits.” As you may know from a previous post of mine, Durian has, also rightfully, earned the nickname, “The King of Fruits.” So I combined them to create The Royal Fruit Pie.

Then I made the icing out of Bananas, which I would pick to be the jester, to complete the royal court trifecta in The Royal Fruit Pie. The thing about the queen is that she requires time to open up and share her gifts. The mangosteen has around 5-6 small pods, of which usually 2-3 have seeds inside, and a hard, thick skin. It is no small feat to gather enough of her blessings to make a pie with. It was worth it once, but I probably won’t be making too many more Mangosteen desserts.

Luckily the king is much more easily convinced into dishing out his goods, so I make plenty of delicacies with his delicious gifts. Despite his rugged and intimidating outer appearance, a ripe Durian (at least the Balinese ones, which are almost perfectly spherical – as opposed to the oblong shaped Bangkok ones) can be opened by hand in a matter of seconds.

Together, the King and Queen make one of the richest, sweetest, downright heavenly fruit pies you’ll ever try.


Due to the tropical nature of this dish, you may not be able to get all the ingredients if you don’t live near the equator. As long as you can get the durian, it’s worth making your own version. I would substitute mango for the mangosteen. In India they call the Mango the King of Fruits, so that would make it the Alternative Lifestyle Royal Fruit Pie.

And if you can’t get Peeled Pili Nuts, replace with ¾ cup cashews (soaked) and ¼ cup coconut oil. Pili nuts solidify in the fridge when blended, so they are acting as one of the setting agents in this pie.
